When looking for a family pet there are several items to consider.  You should consider your family’s life style.  If you have young children you need a dog large enough that the young children can play with their dog and not injure her with their rough playing.  Families that live in an apartment or are relative inactive should choose a dog that is smaller and doesn’t require a lot of outside activity to remain healthy.  Homes with children should always look for a dog that is gentle, affectionate and a social dog that is good with people.

 A long haired dog requires frequent brushing and clippings while a short haired dog requires very little time and is often best for a busy family.  A high energy dog should Have space to run in a back yard or taken on frequent walks to burn excess energy. 
A leather dog lead is excellent for a high energy dog.  Consider your family’s life style before selecting a family dog and ask the breeder or veterinarian  the dog you are considering will be a good match for your family’s lifestyle.

Often items can be knocked over by a pet and eaten before anyone notices.  Always take care to place medicine and other chemicals out of the reach and in an area that your pets can’t accidentally knock over.  Many over the counter pain relievers are toxic to pets and dogs can’t metabolize even small amounts and the result is poison to your dog.  Chocolate is toxic to dogs and causes vomiting diarrhea, abnormal heart rhythms, dehydration, hyperactivity and seizures.

Other toxic items in the home include rodent poisons, household chemicals such as bleach and toiletries.  Several household plants are toxic to pets such as amaryllises, azaleas, hyacinths, lilies and poinsettias.  Dogs are often attracted to antifreeze because of its sweet taste.  all spills and leaks should be cleaned before your pet has a chance to lick and eat the poisons.

Provide your dog with plush dog toys to keep her entertained as you keep dangerous items out of their reach.  We all want our pets to be safe and contented.

Many will be enjoying the celebrating the Fourth of July with family or friends.  You may be attending a Fourth of July parade, picnicking at a park, or camping with your special dog or dogs.   

Keeping your pet cool and safe from the sun and hot weather is important for your dogs health.  When traveling with your pet remember to never leave them in a car.  They can become overheated and dehydrate within minutes in a hot car. 

 Heat Stress Is A Serious Matter For Dogs.  A dog’s body typically has a narrow operating range for its internal temperature of between 100 Degrees F and 102.5 Degrees F. When a dog’s body temperature rises above the upper limits of its average temperature range, several things happen. For example, the blood temperature rises. The brain then detects this rise in temperature and sends more blood towards the skin to help it cool. Respiration also increases in an attempt to draw cooler air into lungs and blood. You will recognize increased respiration as panting. Now consider what happens when a dog is placed in a hot, humid environment. The air being inhaled is hot and, therefore, diffusion of body heat through the skin and respiration is not very effective. 1.         Allow you puppy to be around other people and pet.  Your puppy needs to interact with others.

2.         You must control where your puppy can go.  If he goes to areas in the house that is off limits it is because you didn’t block .his way.

3.         Train your puppy by establishing a potty place and  always take him to the same area. 

4.         When traveling train you puppy to use a dog booster seat for your and his safety.

5.         When your puppy nips at you say no and offer him a chew toy to play with.

6.         A crate is a good way to train your puppy in your home.  A crate also creates a safe place for your puppy to go and get away from the hustle and bustle.

7.         Groom your puppy often to allow him to become accustomed to brushing and grooming care.

8.         Reward your puppy when he obeys your commands.

      9.         Being consistent  is the key to properly training your puppy.
