Toys provide your puppy or dog with appropriate objects to chew on, thus decreasing destructive behavior in your home. Puppies especially are inclined to chew as they use their mouths to examine everything! Chewing behavior increases when puppies are about four months to 12 months old and go through teething. Soft plush toys are great for puppies to teethe on. A favorite can become a security blanket for the pup when he has bedded down for the night. Soft plush toys are usually light enough to carry, soft enough to chew on and machine washable for easy cleaning. Older dogs may also enjoy plush toys. Some plush toys come with squeakers inside that many dogs enjoy. If you need to board or kennel your pet, ask if a favorite toy can come along so your pet has a familiar plaything while away from home.
Offering too many toys at once can overwhelm your pet. Try rotating your dog’s toys every three or four weeks. This way your dog thinks she’s getting new toys!Monitor your dog’s toys frequently. Check for wear and tear or small pieces that can be chewed off and swallowed. Rope toys should be replaced when they become frayed.
Check sizes of toys carefully. Very small balls could be swallowed and obstruct your pet’s intestine. Worse, the ball might get caught in a dog’s throat and choke him. If in doubt, always purchase a larger size toy.
Avoid realistic toys. If the toy looks like a sock or a shoe, your dog might not see the difference between her toy and your expensive athletic wear!
As social animals, dogs love to play with each other, with their toys and with you, their owner. Dogs and puppies are delighted when you offer them a brand new toy. Their excitement and appreciation will certainly make your day

My dog, Daisy, had a favorite toy practically from the day we brought her home from the breeder: her plush hedgehog squeaky toy. As a five-week-old Beagle, the hedgehog was almost bigger than Daisy was! As she grew, eventually becoming much bigger than the hedgehog, Daisy loved chewing on the hedgehog and squeaking the squeaker, but we also often found her snuggling with it. I ended up called the toy “Friend” because he was her best friend!
Of course, Friend eventually became disgusting and needed to be replaced. Daisy did a great job of tearing Friend apart – not very friendly, right? – and his squeaker wouldn’t squeak anymore. I was also worried about Daisy swallowing some of his fluff, or even the squeaker itself, so Friend went into the garbage. I immediately went to several pet stores that sold plush dog toys to track down another Friend for her. I finally found one, and Daisy was so happy to be reunited with him!

Dogs can’t clean their teeth like people do (unless assisted), so it’s important to do what is necessary to keep a dog’s teeth healthy and free from decay. In the past, dogs kept their teeth clean through chewing bones, however, bones can have sharp edges, and if swallowed, can cause serious damage to a dog’s stomach and intestinal tract. Instead of giving a dog a traditional bone for teeth cleaning, give them nylon dog toys. Nylon is much safer than bone for a dog, even if swallowed. There are also flavored nylon dog bones available that most dogs love to chew on. There are some dog treats that can also help to clean a dog’s teeth.
When a dog is chewing a bone, whether nylon or not, it’s best to take it away from them after it is chewed down to a small size capable of being swallowed. Even if it passes through their stomach without causing damage, there’s also the danger of the dog choking on the bone while trying to swallow it.

If your dog is constantly finding things in the house to chew on, whether it’s shoes, furniture, or clothing, it’s a good idea to find them a more appropriate alternative. Rubber dog toys will deter chewing on other objects, and also strengthen your canine’s teeth and improve overall dental health. If your pup still finds objects to chew on, there are a number of preventative techniques you can try. One common solution is to purchase one of the sour tasting sprays designed to deter dogs from chewing on specific objects in the home. If that doesn’t work, you can also try using a squirt gun or a sharp sound whenever the dog starts to chew that will let them know what they’re doing is wrong.
In some cases dogs will be immune to all methods of deterrence, and at that point it’s wise to just keep important objects out of reach of their mouths and cut your losses.

In the world, there may not be anything as cute as a new puppy–warm belly, wet nose, paws going in eight directions at once. But those little fluffballs like to use their teeth!
Your chewing cutie will have his own preferences when it comes to favorite toys—some love rubber Kongs (which can hold food and treats, an extra bonus!), some love a squeaker. Rubber or nylon dog toys are probably the best for chewing purposes—and dogs never really outgrow the need to chew and play!
