Dog Costumes for Halloween

While Halloween is still more than a few months off, now is a great time to prepare our canines for the most exciting holiday of the year (at least for a dog)! Halloween is the best time of the year to be a dog because of all the fun Halloween dog costumes. While people might be a little more reticent to dress up, most dogs are attention loving showboats, and will love all the notice that a Halloween dog costume garners. In addition, purchasing a Halloween dog costume costs a whole lot less during the other seasons of the year. For those who have a dog costume that their favorite canine wears every Halloween, mix it up this year with some fresh threads! Consider something new like a pumpkin costume, dinosaur costume, or the ever popular hot dog costume. Whether smaller or larger in stature, dogs are sure to love the attention from a new dog costume.

Make it a special Halloween this year and ensure that the dog can be involved in all the Halloween festivities. Just make sure to keep them away from the chocolate and candies; dogs and sweets don’t mix well!

Protecting Water Dogs

Dogs, unlike people, are natural swimmers.  While some dogs don’t like the water as much as others, swimming is in their genes.  But when traveling on a boat or watercraft, or spending a long time at the beach, it’s important for dogs to be protected in the water.  Dogs become tired much faster than people, and depending on the circumstances, some can fail to realize that they’re tired when swimming in the water.  This is dangerous because a dog can run out to fetch a ball, and then be in danger of drowning because they’re too tired and they don’t realize it, necessitating the use of a dog life jacket.  There are dog life jackets designed to fit dogs of all different sizes, and the jackets can assist in keeping them afloat.  Swimming is an exhausting activity, and a life jacket will ensure the dog remains safe in the water.

When traveling on a boat, it’s also best to have the dog wear a life jacket, as it’s possible the dog could hit their head on something hard as they fell into the water, or become sucked into a wave or wake if they fell over.

Promoting Dog Dental Health

Dogs can’t clean their teeth like people do (unless assisted), so it’s important to do what is necessary to keep a dog’s teeth healthy and free from decay.  In the past, dogs kept their teeth clean through chewing bones, however, bones can have sharp edges, and if swallowed, can cause serious damage to a dog’s stomach and intestinal tract.  Instead of giving a dog a traditional bone for teeth cleaning, give them nylon dog toys.  Nylon is much safer than bone for a dog, even if swallowed.  There are also flavored nylon dog bones available that most dogs love to chew on.  There are some dog treats that can also help to clean a dog’s teeth.

When a dog is chewing a bone, whether nylon or not, it’s best to take it away from them after it is chewed down to a small size capable of being swallowed.  Even if it passes through their stomach without causing damage, there’s also the danger of the dog choking on the bone while trying to swallow it.

Promoting Healthy Eating Habits… For Dogs!

Just like people, dogs need to eat a healthy diet and maintain good eating habits.  But dogs tend to be much different than people.  For example, dogs don’t need to eat a sizable meal more than once per day.  Often it’s most common for dogs to eat one sizable meal in the morning or evening, and have a small handful of food at different intervals throughout the day.  Dogs that ate three meals a day as people do would become overweight in no time at all.  When selecting a dog food, it’s best to choose organic dog food because of the obvious benefits it provides in terms of better vitamins and minerals and more healthy ingredients.

You can also promote good eating habits by having a raised dog feeder  Raised dog feeders do more than serve to keep the floor a bit cleaner, they also promote healthy digestion in larger dogs.  When dogs crane their necks to the ground while swallowing food, it can cause irregular digestion and even cause them to choke.  If a dog eats their food while their head is level with their body, it promotes better health.

Dog Costumes for all Holidays!

There’s nothing better than having a cute costume on your favorite pooch around the holidays.  Not only does your dog draw the admiration of you, the owner, but also of all those guests who tend to manifest during the holidays.  Dog costumes are quite popular and most are comfortable enough to the point that the dog won’t feel obligated to chew on it.  You can use dog costumes throughout the year for holidays and special occasions, though it is important to be wary during the summer months when the heat combined with the costume can cause a dog to become dehydrated.  But under most circumstances, wearing a dog costume is both a benefit to the pooch and their owner.

You can find dog costumes at a number of online stores, where the largest selections tend to be available.  In addition, some tailors are able to make custom dog costumes which can provide your special dog with clothing that is as unique as their personality.

Play the Matching Game

There’s no reason why your dog shouldn’t dress just like you. For example, if you have a formal style and like to dress up, outfit your dog in a black bow tie or sequined dress. If you are a sporty-type of person you probably wear baseball caps, so get your dog one that matches yours.

If you are like me then you probably prefer casual wear best. There’s nothing like slipping into a hoodie and sweats after a long day at work. Get a matching hooded dog sweatshirt for your canine friend. That way the two of you can enjoy lounging the evening away.

Pull Back that Messy Hair!

I have long hair, so I know how annoying it can be to have hair hanging in your eyes. It’s enough to drive you nuts. The days when you forget to bring a ponytail holder with you are the worst. I can imagine how distracting this would be for long-haired dogs.

Don’t let your dog suffer with hair hanging in his/her face obscuring their vision. Instead, invest in some dog barrettes. Dog barrettes are easy to secure in your dog’s hair and are comfortable for your dog to wear. Don’t let your pup wander around like a ragamuffin, pull their hair from their faces and let them shine!
